Like most businesses in the construction industry, risk assessments are essential, United Utilities Water Limited has received a total of £933,000 in fines after an issue at one of their sites had killed fish. Sodium hypochlorite is used in the water purification process and is also the principle ingredient of household bleach, it is known for being deadly to aquatic life. Unfortunately a container containing this had managed to seep up to the surface water therefore killing fish. This was performed without a risk assessment and could have been prevented!
